 What they eat matters

One of the deepest acts of compassion we can offer these animals is food that makes them feel good from the inside out. In the wild, burros roam up to 10 miles a day, grazing a wide variety of fibrous, low-sugar plants that keep them naturally lean and healthy.

At the sanctuary, we work hard to honor that. What we’ve learned is that donkeys are especially sensitive to sugar in their diet — and that the wrong feed can lead to weight gain, metabolic issues, and a painful condition called laminitis.

So we made a change. We’ve moved to Teff — a higher quality hay that more closely mirrors what their bodies were designed for. The benefits we expect to see:

Lower risk of metabolic issues

Healthier hooves and less risk of laminitis

Fewer vet visits and less discomfort overall

Better hay means healthier bodies — more running, more playing, more of the joyful life they deserve — and fewer medical costs over time. It is one of the most meaningful investments we can make in their lives.
